I've started to put in place some not New Year's resolutions already because things were there to be arranged:

1. Put my name down for the local town ground force which does clean ups, tidy ups and bulb planting type activities to cheer the place up
2. Made contact with a local older people's forum again - informative speakers and nice people
3. Accepted that I will not find work again as I'm of pensionable age with too much experience and living in a rural area with too few opportunities
4. Accept that the allotment is in reasonable fettle so that it should be fully productive from now on and just needs the usual graft to keep it that way

What else for the next year?

1. Get back into the habit of reading more rather than just looking things up on the internet
2. Repair the decorations in the bedroom and then accept that the flat is as good as it will ever be allowing for it's age and history
3. Design my own greetings cards using computer software and accept that I've not the patience to do fancy ones by hand
4. Keep down the clutter - clutter is a bad family habit and needs to be broken
5. Eat less of those nice, fattening foods I like (think cheese and chocolate  )

And even have a second, serious attempt at nothing new for a year

My list starts now rather than New Year - mainly because hubby is off work from the 23rd - I shall utilise him for all he's worth while he's home!

1 - Clear the gardens of all the chopped trees - pile branches in the woods & chop the trunks & stumps into logs for the pile.
2 - Dig out the grass area to the hayshed for a gravel fill, so the tractor bringing our peat turfs won't keep getting stuck!
3 - Use soil from the dug area to raise the proposed ground where the chicken & turkey houses & ryns will be - sow grass seed, even if it won't be there for long!
4 - Finish chopping trees down so the proposed veggie patch will have lots of light
5 - Build chicken house & run
6 - Build same for turkeys
7 - Buy Chickens & Turkeys
8 - Fence off garden to the derelict house & make it strong enough to keep a pair of piglets in
9 - Clear the cart house & make safe for a pig house.
10 - Buy 2 piglets
11 - Build raised beds & start on veggie patch
12 - Build polytunnel at back of hayshed
13 - Start growing in polytunnel
14 - Watch hubby dig area out for his pond - then make a duck house & buy some ducks
15 - Finish chopping the large beech hedge at the front of the garden & enjoy the view over the fields
16 - Make hubby insulate the loft properly
17 - Plan, source & learn how to change windows, so we have double glazing for next winter
18 - Drain our bogs & clear the fir trees so our man can dig us our own peat turfs next year - will save us a fortune
19 - Look at painting each room in the house - and replace the floors
20 - Replace the radiators for new efficient ones

And there's more, but my brain has gone to mush just writing this lot out - I think it's going to be a busy year!!!

Thought I wasnt going to reply to this thread beacuse thought that making new years type resolutions public might mean I have to stick to them, but then thought that actually that might not be a bad thing, so here goes:

Get more points towards my masters in teaching and learning by writing next essay before August,
Get to ten stone by my wedding in July (not telling how far away I am!),
Grow *more* of my own veg,

Think thats enought for now.

Go to the Lost Gardens of Heligan too, you'll find it's just as much fun and a bit less commercial than the Eden Project. Take a day for each. Make a holiday of it.

1. Declutter and keep house relatively clean and tidy! This I hope to achieve out of guilt more than anything. My partner is one of lifes hard workers and I am the complete opposite, but since he has been kind enough to say he will allow me to give up work if I keep house properly the least I can do is try to do it well!

2. Rescue some ex-battery chickens and give them all the freedom and care they deserve.

3. Apply myself more to my horticulture college course. At the moment I don't stand a chance of passing the exam in June but if I make the proper effort at least I'll have the knowledge that I tried my best to comfort me when I fail!

4. Produce as much food from our own garden as possible and try to establish a forest garden at our woodland. Possibly a polytunnel also if funds permit.

5. Try not to buy as much unnecessary tat ( I have a weakness for cheap books from Amazon!) and buy less processed junk food. Particularly must take control of the seriously out of hand chocolate addiction. I think a 100g bar a day is excessive don't you?!!!

6. Learn to knit properly. I can do straight knitting but have never attempted anything more challenging than a scarf! Would love to make myself a jumper so perhaps I'll work towards that as a christmas present to myself for next year. Also learn to sew properly so I can make curtains, cushions etc for my new house.

7. Cycle more. I used to cycle to work and quite enjoyed it when I could avoid really busy roads. I just need to remember that I enjoyed it to get over that initial "I can't be arsed" feeling whenever the prospect of cycling somewhere presents itself.
