There's a thread on what to do with spinach beet which is pretty much the same as beetroot leaves. I think you'd better do a search because recipes etc probably come up on several threads.

And no, you are not the only one who eats beetroot tops, you're on Self Suffish remember!

That's what I love about this place! You're not alone it's tricky buying them before the tops are cut off though!

I LOVE beetroot leaves - delicious!

I grew some white and red beetroot last year and they were ever so tasty - David wasn't too sure about trying it but enjoyed it anyway.

Silver I'm just looking at my planting instructions for beeterroot (I know I'm llate but everythings behind anyway so why not give it a try?!) and it suggests soaking for an hour to remove chemicals that might be on there to stop the growing....

Hadn't heard of soaking them before sowing... nice one. We've been lucky with ours then in that case... we bought ours from www.realseeds.com so chances are that they don't use chemicals... might just ask them the question though.

It's not too late for beetroot anyway - according to that site you can plant up until mid july and as you say Cassie - everything is behind anyway.

I got organic beetroot seeds (Allan Tichmarsh was on the packet :? ) just from the local garden centre and they have all germanated with 2 shoots, bar one seed (out of 24)- which hasn't come up at all.

Any idea what to do with the 2 shoots? should I pinch off the smaller of the 2 or just leave them both?

It says on the packet to cook the leaves like spinach, I think it did anyway, I am sure I remembered reading something like that... hmmm :?

No, leave them as they are. I can't remember all the details, but there are certain seeds that actually have two halves, so you get what seems like two plants coming out of each seed - I think spinach beet is another.

Anyway from what I remember when I grew them 2 years ago you don't actually get 2 beetroots (i.e. the root bit) from the one seed.

Beetroot seeds, unless processed, are a cluster of seeds so you can get up to 6 shoots!

I bought the same seeds (and organic were much cheaper than normal) and planted 20 and all have popped up within a week
