Leeks

Post: # 191351Post pelmetman »

Just a query, I have just sown some leek seeds from a seed head that I saved last year. I have done this before, but it is a very fiddly job getting the tiny black seed out of the husks  So this year I did one row with the tiny seeds and another row with out bothering to remove the husk, which is a lot easier
My thinking is that in nature the husk would just fall to the ground so why not give it a try.
Has anybody else tried this
Kind Regards

I've never even saved any seeds before, although I'm planning to this year.

I think plants are usually cleverer than us though so think you're right, nature would have done this easily. Perhaps the frost might have had a hand in it and the rain? If we collect the seed in the summer or autumn then they might miss this stage.

Have your leeks germinated yet?

Not yet as I only did them yesterday, but I have had my seed bed covered for the last month to warm it up so hopefully not to long
