Quinces!

Post: # 170766Post Mylovelyhorse »

I've just been given a load of quinces, on Freecycle!

Lovely lovely things. They're sitting in the kitchen, smelling divine. And on Sunday I shall convert most of them into quince jam, saving one or two to be poached and eaten as a pudding...

Mmmm! :flower:

Don't envy you the chopping up though  but enjoy the finished product.

Yummy, I love quinces.

Apparently they grow up here quite well. We bought two tiny plants earlier this year, so are hoping for good things - in about 10 years

I've heard of adding just one quince to an otherwise apple pie, to lend it something special flavour-wise.

i'm jealous as we put in a quince tree 3 years ago, and only afterward found out that they do really badly here, and the tree is sickly looking and barely hanging on.

As Red said, use them in pies. As a child we had a huge and very productive quince tree in the garden. We'd use them in quince and apple pies (about 50:50) The taste was magnificent. We also used to use them as room fresheners. A couple of ripe quines in each room gave off the most fantastic smell.

We've moved now and don't have any quince trees unfortunately. If I could find one, I'd plant it in a heartbeat.
