I got a kit from a garden centre (or was it wilkos?...i can't remember) and it was £5. Not sure i got £5 worth of mushrooms from it, but there y'go. I used spores (also bought from somewhere) to reseed the compost and they did quite well too.

thats great thanx...we use mushrooms in most our recipies so that will cut costs ...

Don't expect to get a huge amount though - i got probably 5 handfuls out of one kit. It is probably worth you getting some more spores afterwards to use, and then dump the compost after the second lot (or use it to grow something other than mushrooms in).

Definitely bean sprouts, used to grow those as a kid, great fun and they only take a week or two so they won't get bored.

Do you have a staircase that you could utilise? you could try growing some nasturtiums up the walls, you can eat the flowers, leaves and seeds.
Opinionated but harmless

I've not done runner beans, but for bean sprouts you want mung (moong) beans. put them in a container about the size of an ice cream tub, you will need say enough beans for a cm deep, cover with water, leave for a day, change the water, leave for a day, the almost drain the water and cover, each day I change the rinse them, just leaving a little in the bottom. Don't leave in a sunny spot as they may go off an ferment. Also don't put them on the radiator.
They are done when you think they look big enough, with a root and a pair of leaves.

Also if you really have no way of growing veggies outside, then consider foraging, no matter where you live you will be able to find dandelions and nettles.
Opinionated but harmless

**waves** HELLOOOOOOO TEA! where do i keep saying I'll take you? local nature reserve.
what have i said I'll do? impart all of my (ok limited) forraging knowledge on to you!!

you could always become a "freegan" and go raid the bins behind your local co-op on a saturday afternoon. most co-ops get their main delivery on a sat morning...

And if you do decide to sprout moong, can we go halves on a bag? I'll make us some body scrubs with my half.
