Beans and peas

Post: # 67842Post SueSteve »

Hi,
We find we have 4 veg (grown on allotment) in most meals, but seriously lack in protein foods. We eat lots of chick peas, soya beans, butter beans.
Can we grow any of these in this country?
At the moment we grow runner and dwarf french beans, mange tout, sugar snap and normal peas.
I am trying to think of high proteins that I can grow!
Next year we hope to try growing amaranths and quinoa so we will have some of our own grains :)

different country to you but have found chickpeas to be very easy to grow, so would recommend trying if you think you can offer them the right conditions.

I'm hoping to grow butter beans next year, took a bit of finding as they are called lima beans in most catalogues. Here's a link to the uk place I found for them.

Or you could try haricot beans - the kind that produces the white beans inside the pod rather than the 'french' green beans for eating. Then you can make your own baked beans!

Those butter/lima beans sound great - cos we can't buy them in France and I love butter beans!

Hi Milly Molly Mandy

Try Thompson seeds on line for butter beans. They are available direct via post in France from the website - as well as lots of other veg seeds currently on offer for next spring. Thompsons have a French catalogue on line as well as UK.

Hi thanks - I have used T&M in the past but I never thought about growing butter beans beause I'd never thought about where they came from before (apart from tins!)

Shall put them on the seed shopping list for my husband when he goes to England next month and if not I'll order some.
