Carrots again - growing from tops

Post: # 49292Post the.fee.fairy »

I've got a few carrots and parsnip tops in a saucer of water that are growing happily.

Any ideas what to do next?

Damn this experimental growing thing...

I don't think you will get another carrot etc. but you will get plenty of foliage and when the weather heats up you should get seeds.

I know you can eat leaves of some root vegetables and I know that some leaves, like rhubarb are poisonous.

It would be good to have a list of bits of plant you can eat other than what we usually grow it for (if you get what I mean)

For instance can we eat pea leaves?

you can, i remember last year (i think) there was a big thing about some shop selling young pea leaves. apparently, they taste like raw peas and they're very good for you.

I think I remember seeing on the forums somewhere that you can eat carrot tops, I think Adekun mentioned it. Beets and Turnips also have edible leaves, don't know about any others though.

Yep, 9Ball, Adekun mentioned it..............in Japanese soups IIRC.

No, Fee, carrots & parsnips are not dioecious, they have male and female bits on the same plant.

In the series "The allotment" there's a section with Mike Feingold explaining that all parts of the radish plant are edible including the leaves and seed pods (apparently they taste like the radish but milder). I'm going to let some go to seed this year and try that.

Courgette and marrow flowers are edible so when you are thinning don't stick them on the compost, put them on your plate.

We all started somewhere Fee, adn anyway it is very impolite to laugh at people!

Having said that, my father (an ex farmer and gardener of great experience) derived considerable merriment at my first efforts of planting sweet peas and expecting an edible crop.......

I planted carrot tops in a container in november and there doing quite well so come summer i will pull them up and see what i get.

I only did it to see what would happen as i think actually going and doing is the best form of research.

We bought a large bag of onions that was the price of about 4 onions, so naturally we had too many. There were three that really started growing, so we put them in a bowl with some water in the windowsill and let them carry on growing us green shoots to add to salads/soups. Not a bad deal really.
