A few years ago I had a tickly cough. My father in law mixed a teaspoon of cod liver oil with a tea spoon of whisky and made me drink it neat.

It tasted so revolting that I didn't dare cough again in case he made me drink some more. Certainly cured the cough.

We use a homemade elderberry tincture and echinacea/elderberry (Sambucol) cough syrup. Zinc works great for us for sore throats.
