The Ideal location....?

Post: # 229606Post celticman »

Hello I everyone I am new to this site....
I am looking for a location worldwide to settle into a self sufficient lifestyle...
I thought it might be good to have a full year round growing season but not too hot so a higher altitude may be necessary if near the equator! Of course a place with a good degree of political security.
Anybody have any thoughts and ideas?

Hi celticman, welcome to Ish

You could move in next door to odsox - he's got 12 month tomato-growing down to a fine art! Otherwise I wouldn't know - we're lucky to get 3 months up here.

We're off to RoI (although not quite next to Odsox! ). I doubt we'll manage 12-month crops in the veg sense, but there will be eggs for most of the year, milk when ever the goats have kidded, pickles, jams, marmalades etc out of main season etc. So I suppose it depends what you like to eat.

I think locations are like men : none are perfect but some are far better than others!

Best by far, head for the South shropshire hills, where the sun shines every day,the land is fertile, and every one has a smile on their face....(and, strangely,I just happen to know of a smallholding for sale).......
Avoid the south of Italy,...I'm sure you wouldn't like it.....

Seroiusly, the location isn't that important, nor even the size of your plot, but your frame of mind IS. Best Wishes.

Hi Steve.
One of the most important things to bear in mind is to choose somewhere with sufficient rainfall.
Much more important than temperature as that can generally be overcome with tunnels, greenhouses etc, but as OJ says, choose somewhere that suits your idea of a perfect spot .. not someone else's.

Or sea level, here the temperature rarely goes above 22c in summer or below 6c in winter, as this peninsula is tempered by the marvellous gulf stream. Islands are good too, my choice would be Madeira or Azores except there is no way I could learn Portuguese, I can barely master English as it is.

Ireland (beyond the Pale) still has a relatively low population density, an equable climate, the best music in the world and nowhere's far away.

If you're determined to be as self-sufficient as possible, are healthy and can live on little money, you could do worse than Ireland. Keep tabs on what's happening; emigration is heading back up again as 'proper' jobs disappear. There could be some bargain properties coming up.
There is no question. Cap and Share or TEQs is the answer. Even Cap and Dividend!

Pretty much any where you locate to will have it's own set of challenges. You'd be better off of drawing up a shortlist of places you would like to move to and take it from there.
