What! Jeez, now you are treating the poor guy like a baby. Why not make his ice cream into little footballs and make him pretend his mouth is the goal?
No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery

Don't worry, he doesn't seem to be entirely emasculated just yet
Rosie, I do that too. I'm turning into the woman on goodness gracious me who could recreate anything with only one small aubergine.
Now, I don't want anyone to be worried, but I've bought more ice cream ingredients today
(I'm reminding myself of this: http://www.mil-millington.com/. I think it used to be a column in the Guardian.)

Re: Advice pls, am I being difficult
I'm in hysterics reading that link and I thought OH and I got on fine
This one sums us up - I'm Margret.
Margret doesn't like to watch films on the TV. No, hold on - let me make sure you've got the inflection here: Margret doesn't like to watch films on the TV. She says she does, but years of bitter experience have proven that what she actually wants is to sit by me while I narrate the entire bleeding film to her. 'Who's she?', 'Why did he get shot?', 'I thought that one was on their side?', 'Is that a bomb' - 'JUST WATCH IT! IN THE NAME OF GOD, JUST WATCH IT!' The hellish mirror-image of this is when she furnishes me, deaf to my pleading, with her commentary. Chair-clawing suspense being assaulted mercilessly from behind by such interjections as, 'Hey! Look! They're the cushions we've got.', 'Isn't she the one who does that tampon advert?' and, on one famous occasion, 'Oh, I've seen this - he gets killed at the end.'
Oh and the 'every pot and pan in the house' one too.
I can't read more as I'll be here all day!

Ahhhhahaha, my other half is Margaret!!! Every time we watch a film 'whos that guy?', 'where did she come from?', 'why has the world blown up?' Oh I just had the most hearty giggle over this one

Re: Advice pls, am I being difficult
Susie I would like you to give me back the several hours I lost yesterday on the Mil Millington site- MMM may be partially responsible for posting the quote.
Why is it so compelling? I love the FAQ's. Oh and back on topic- you are not being difficult- he is acting like a child IMHO and you should make icecream so he has no possible reason to moan. Most commercial icecream is vile. The stuff from Aldi is the worst. Once we tipped out some Aldi "chocolate icecream" because of it's weird aftertaste and the brown colour separated into red, blues and yellows....(colours.. why didn't they use cocoa for the chocolate colour or.. I don't know... chocolate?) The ingredients looked ok but it was nasty chemically tasting stuff...

So sorry
I haven't dared go back on that site even though I was thoroughly enjoying it as I haven't got the time right now.
I hadn't realised Aldi had got as far as Australia too (do you have Lidl?). That ice cream sounds vile!

Re: Advice pls, am I being difficult
If you are "difficult", then you are not alone.
I believe it is a man thing. They want something and feel everso slightly guilty about it, but it must be right if you want the same thing too. If you don't then you make them feel uncomfortable and they don't like that, hence causing a minor argument.
But does it ever happen that you say no thanks, I don't want [ice cream, whatever] but he gets you one anyway because he KNEW that you really did want one after all?
My old Mum always said yes dear, no dear to my Dad and kept her thoughts to herself. Nah, that's not for me.
Incidentally, home-made is always better than shop-bought, and that's a fact.

Yes! Yes it does! Daveswife I think you are right in your analysisDaveswife wrote: But does it ever happen that you say no thanks, I don't want [ice cream, whatever] but he gets you one anyway because he KNEW that you really did want one after all?

Also, I found this one on the Mil Millington site, it struck me as a bit ishy:
'Back at the previous item, it's just after Christmas and Margret's going on about her present, which was, you'll recall, a necklace of a single diamond suspended on a delicate chain of white gold and sapphires. And this is what I hear come out of her mouth - 'Why didn't you get me a wormery, I dropped enough hints?' You what?'

Re: Advice pls, am I being difficult
No we don't have Lidl and we don't have Aldi here in Tasmania. I used to buy everything from Aldi and have just remembered I didn't know how I would cope without them. Funnily enough I do and we eat a lot more local produce now because I have gone nuts with bulk buying from locals...I hadn't realised Aldi had got as far as Australia too (do you have Lidl?). That ice cream sounds vile!
Lidl is pretty much the same as Aldi? We could probably do with some more competition down here but I manage ok. Butter is very expensive though:(
We do have great icecream down here though- almost as good as home made. Gelato is the real "thing" down here mmmmm. For some reason my husband thinks that gelato is "slimming". mind you he thinks that buttery home made popcorn is "slimming" too. That's why I do the nutrition in this house.
I had a male friend who though that if I turned down a beer I was making a pompous statement about his lack of self control and my infinte superiority. He was quite shocked when I explained that no- I just didn't feel like a beer then. Mind you I wouldn't take him as an example of general male mind workings- there was a great mix of past drug use and unmanaged mental illness there...

Re: Advice pls, am I being difficult
Yes, Lidl/Aldi and Netto are pretty much the same - cheapo cut price basic stuff type stuff. When I moved here 6 years ago there was one Lidl about 50 mins away and now there are loads of them, there is no recession where Lidl is concerned
as new ones keep opening up every year, closer and closer to where I live! I'd say they were to France what T€sco is to the UK - taking over.......
I must look up some gelato recipes and see if it is possible to make in my nice new ice cream maker - it comes with recipes for ice cream and sorbets but not gelato - I don't really understand how that is made to be honest but it is my fave - only eaten it in Italy and Australia!

Re: Advice pls, am I being difficult
My OH is definately not 'ish' in spite of the fact that we have lived on two smallholdings - mind you, he just 'lived' on them - I did all the work !
I made my own bread, wine, filled the freezer with nutritious and frugal meals, raised my own vegetables, kept chickens and ducks for eggs, sheep for the fleeces which I spun and sold, kept goats for their milk, made my own jams, chutneys, fruit syrups etc. etc. etc.,
I might as well have got it all from T****o's - he never notices what he eats, just gulps it down like a dog !! after all my efforts - he just doesn't care what he eats, the phrase 'no good casting pearl before swine' springs to mind !
sometime's you just can't change 'em, I'm retired now and have given up trying, I feed myself as healthily as I can, and he can eat the junk - it's his choice.
Oh if anyone is looking for a 'spare husband' - mine is going cheap - in fact he's going free, I'll even deliver him if you like
be warned though - he's about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike

Re: Advice pls, am I being difficult
You know how you get sudden, blinding insights into life, love etc........well this morning revealed how much I drag my OH on my Ish quest. Let me explain.
I have to go for a colonoscopy tomorrow - regular check due to family history not personal problems! Anyway today I have to take the stuff that acts as human Dynarod and for breakfast and lunch I can eat low residue meals. DD was duly dispatched to the shop for some sliced white toasting bread
and for breakfast and we had boiled eggs, mashed with a little butter, salt and pepper and aforementioned toast.
OH has been grinning from ear to ear since breakfast and wants me to have one done at least once a month. When he gets a tuna mayo sandwich on the same bread for lunch he'll know it's his birthday
I sometimes wonder why I bother!

Re: Advice pls, am I being difficult
I think it's human nature to want the things you don't have. I bet if you always had "white sliced" bread he'd get excited over home made or bakery bread.
I know I miss the "junk" from my diet... but after I cave in and buy, for example, a ready meal I always regret eating it cause while it is easy, it's no where near as nice as home cooked.
Alternatively have "your food" and "his food" then you can both be happy
