We've had this discussion before, SE, it's a tricky one. American cups and UK cups are slightly different ones 225ml the other 250ml ( i think the US one is the larger) so depending on where your recipe's from it will be one or t'other. I'd try the smaller and if the mixture looks too sloppy add a bit more.

I hate recipes like that - how on earth do you get hard butter from the fridge INTO a bloody measuring cup in the first place? It's like stupid recipes calling for tablespoons of butter, oh come on.............. Just give a weight!
