Good! (oops what am I saying, I'll be hung drawn and quartered by the Scottish contingency!).

My OH makes proper Yorkshire pud but I prefer mine with maple or golden syrup all over it. I grew up calling it 'batter' (that's what my Bucks grandma called it) and she always served it to me with cream made from the scum off boiled milk (yes really, yum!) and golden syrup.

Like GA I think that patties are just things that you 'pat' into a shape with your hands then shallow fry.

Never came across Jamaican patties in west London either - wrong part of town. You might find them at the Notting Hill carnival though I never noticed them there. Too busy stuffing my face with that wonderful fudgy stuff they make with real coconut. I do think that West Indian cuisine is the most exciting I have ever tasted but sadly not had it many times. Jamaican curry is very like Fijian curry which is worlds apart from anglicised Indian curry.

I lived in West London throughout the late 70s and early 80s - no problem getting patties anywhere. I lived in Hammersmith, Fulham and then Shepherds Bush. Yummy.

What kind of shop did you buy them in GA? I've lived in Kensington, White City, Chiswick, Shep Bush, various parts of Acton and various parts of Wimbledon. Never saw any West Indian shops or restos there. :( Nearly every food shop was either Greek, Middle Eastern or Indian/Pakistani.

There were loads of little West Indian shops - often had various hair pomades and things like that in the windows. But most of them had a hot counter with patties.

Having gone fairly off topic as regards the kind of patties this thread is about  I do remember shops with west indian hair products in the window, but as I've got very fine straightish mousy brown hair with highlights I didn't bother to look too closely!

ooooh did someone mention proper fishcakes and hendersons relish.... I used to live in sheffield and my fav thing from the chippy was a 'cake butty. Lovely fishcake made from potato slices with fish in the middle in a huge oven bottom breadcake. I guess that is a bit of a variation of a pattie. As someone else said I think another name for pattie is scollop. As for Henderson's relish, its the best thing for putting on stew, cottage pie etc etc. I live in norfolk now and my dads friend brings us a case of relish to keep in stock! Love it

I'm not from yorkshire, i was not aware of what a pattie is but i know what a barnsley chop is, and i make a mean yorkshire pudding.

also, i am from nottingham so i call rolls cobs too, despite having lived in Essex for longer than i lived in nottingham lol!! my hubby refuses to be taught about the delights of pork dripping on toast or mushy peas followed by a good dose of pyriton.

It's a sedating antihistamine, Nev. Good for allergies.

And no, I didn't quite understand the reference either. But who knows the workings of the Flibble's mind?

Oh I thought it was that heartburn stuff I've seen advertised on telly! That would make a lot more sense!

hahahaha should have explained that. most mushy peas from chip shops in the uk contain a rather nasty azo ye called Brilliant Blue, oftwen in combination with quite a few other nasty ones. i get a severe reaction to brilliant blue, but if used in combination with other colourings, i get such a severe reaction that it can knock me out for half a day or so.......

so, on the rare occasions i eat shop-bought mushy peas, i take antihystemines as a precaution against losing half the day through passing out or throwing up and/or scratching myself raw.

In Teesside a pattie is a slice of fish between two slices of potato, battered and fried, the thing with the mashed potato and fish is a fishcake.

Mmm. Not been to the chippy in ages...

Ah, the pattie/scallop!
I was first introduced to these when I moved to Blackpool at the age of 37.... it certainly wasn't something I'd come across in the 'proper' chippies of the south-east of england.... and no, I didn't like 'em one bit.

Chips shops 'up north', especially in a seaside town like Blackpool & Fleetwood just up the road & with a Harry Ramsden's there as well, are complete & utter rubbish!!! And what's the deal with Whitby? Total Cr@p...... Large cod? Ha!

WHERE is the Rock/Rig on the menu??? What about saveloys??? Skate wings?? Why are they deemed a 'luxury' item?? And gherkins - why no gherkins???
Pffftt... you don't even get a choice of fish in most Blackpool chippies - it's all cod/haddock & whatever comes is what you get....
Oh, I miss Papa's chippy in Folkestone :(

Now... patties are really pastry cases filled with veg & a gorgeous yellow colour, and can be found here when I can be bothered making them  Yes, I was dragged up in & around Brixton

And yorkshire puds? Simple - equal amounts in a cup measure of flour, eggs & milk - add salt, pepper, any herbs, whatever, mix well, leave to stand for 30 mins for the gluten to absorb & make sure to NEVER use oil - goose fat is the very best!!
I don't even make mine any more - Leah (5 yrs old) makes ours now & they always rise & are great!!
The more people I meet, the more I like my garden
