you could buy grain sold as hen food to sow?

Unlikely to be suitable for baking - feed grain are different varieties from grain for human consumption.

I used a strip of my allotment about a metre wide and about 3 metres long, but as I say, I didn't manage to protect a lot of it from birds and didn't cut it down at all whcih would have sent up more shoots, so I could have grown much, much more on that bit than I actually did. Just over half of what I got went to make the single, small loaf.

I wouldn't know the answer to this so would trust Ina. What I would like to mention for anyone who doesn't know is that there is 'winter' wheat and 'spring' wheat. I grew winter wheat, sowing it in late Autumn. It's ready for harvesting earlier than wheat you sow in the spring, but gives you 'ordinary' flour, not the strong flour that most people use to make bread, and that's why my bread didn't rise much and was so dense.

Aren't they awful - they just don't trust people to buy stuff if it doesn't have a fancy name. I think it was in a healthfood shop in Germany where I saw spelt sold as "spelt rice" - indicating that you could cook it like rice. Well, it's either rice or it is spelt - how stupid do they thing we are???? :roll:

I went into our local 'health food' shop and one in a neighbouring village and they didn't have them. It seems all they sell there is body building supplements, dieting supplements, energy supplements, a few over-priced herbal remedies and a little bit of vegetarian meat-substitute food. Oh and some nuts. But yes, when I bought them off eBay they were called 'sprouting wheatgrain' or something like that.

I've asked EthicalSuperstore if the ones from Suma are winter or spring wheat and they have passed on the question to the manufacturer. If I get an answer I'll let you all know. I can see demand going up for it :wink:
