Low fat Apple Crumble

Post: # 128232Post Cligereen »

Since apples are in season and I've had 'a bit of trouble' with my cholesterol levels in the past, here's a low fat version...

Stew apples with sugar as normal (there's no fat in sugar) and bung it in an ovenproof dish.

Meanwhile, Make about 2 cups of breadcrumbs from wholemeal brown bread. Then crush about half a cup of walnuts in a pestle and mortar (or crush them with a wooden mallet).

Mix breadcrumbs, crushed walnuts and about 2 tablespoons of sugar, and spread over stewed apple.

Bake for about 20 mins in a hot oven and serve with low fat custard (made with skimmed milk).

Along similar lines:

Whizz up some oats, prunes and jam/honey/syrup in the blender until they resemble the crumble mix you are used to. The prunes seem to work in place of the fat and you don't need much jam so add a little at a time. The resulting "topping" is a bit soggier than a traditional crumble but very tasty. Add nuts, cinnamon or nutmeg to taste.
