Re: Hedgerow ID?
It looks like it could be a Sorbus species but I can't get any closer than that. If you compare it with the Swedish Whitebeam wiki here you can see there are similarities, but it is not the same. There seems to be some hybridisation between closely related Sorbus species so it may not be possible to...

How do I split peas?
Is there a way to make split peas at home? I have had a cursory google search and what seems to come up is that there are certain varieties of pea that the seed coat just falls off and they fall apart. This strikes me as a bit unlikely as there would not be viable seed for the next year's crop. Anot...

You could try shazam on your mobile phone. I tried to find an online version but couldn't.

Re: Asparagus
I think conventional wisdom says no, however when I had to move allotments a few years ago I didn't want to give up my mature asparagus bed without a fight, so I dug up about half of it, it spent the winter in a large container of compost/soil and I planted it in the new bed in the spring. 3 years l...

Re: Bread Making.
I have just got some wholemeal spelt flour to try for bread. Has anybody got any experience or advice for me? Any pitfalls to avoid or tips to make an edible loaf. I am concerned it may turn out too heavy, what is your spelt experience?

Allotment Rent
Invoice arrived at the weekend, it's gone up to £52 a year. Massive price hike. (Was only thirty something last year.) Phoned the council department and the bloke sounded as cheesed off as me, obviously dealing with a lot of complaints, all concessions cancelled too, this is going to put many people...

Just harvested my first PSB spears, looking forward to my tea! Not had any home grown for a few years and it is one of my favourite vegetables. Yum.

Re: How best to grow chard?
I think it is actually a biennial, it will go to seed in it's second year although I believe the leaves are still edible when it is flowering. I have left a few plants to go to seed in the past and collected the seed. They can get to 6ft tall easily but the seed is easily collected.

Re: Council compost ?
I got some a few years back, it was free to all, you just helped yourself. I found it had a large proportion of un-broken-down woody bits and quite a noticable amount of plastic bits. Not great. I would be cautious in using it myself.

Re: Freezing mash
I processed a load of my small/holy/going soft spuds into roasties and mash for freezing. I didn't add anything to the mash, just let it cool then pushed it into ice-cube trays to freeze in batches, then popped the frozen cubes into a big bag. Easy to get as much as you need whenever you want and th...

Re: Pattie and chips
In Teesside a pattie is a slice of fish between two slices of potato, battered and fried, the thing with the mashed potato and fish is a fishcake.
