Re: What are you havesting

Spring onions, radishes, lettuces of all sorts, coriander, parsley, mint, lemon balm, sage, rosemary, bay, rhubarb, a few strawberries, basil, chives, French tarragon - roll on the runners, tomatoes and courgettes - everything is growing at such a rate, particularly the grass and weeds!

Re: Poorly chicken with emerald green/white sloppy poo

Thanks MSM. When I went up to do the animals this morning she had died in her run. I only collected her a few months ago, so it's a real shame. I hate it when animals die before you can get things sorted. On the bright side, I collected six Coucou de Rennes and two Black Orpingtons on Monday night a...

Poorly chicken with emerald green/white sloppy poo

One of my last year's chickens has emerald green/white sloppy poo. Her tail is down and her bum is very mucky. I have separated her out into a separate run and house this afternoon and put cider vinegar in her water container as I read somewhere that this cures a multitude of sins. Any ideas otherwi...

Re: French tarragon

I've just bought a plant about 18"/45cm high here in Brittany and I'm going to plant it this afternoon. The leaves seem to taste as they should so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's the genuine item.

Re: Growing Wild Garlic

Really weird, but I've never seen wild garlic here in Brittany. When I lived in Cornwall you'd get the aroma of garlic whenever you went out walking in the country, but here, nothing.

Herbs

I decided I'd take photos of the herbs I have - I thought there would be around six, but when I went searching I found eleven:

Rosemary
Mints
Lemon Balm
Basil
Sage
Thyme
Fennel
Coriander
Parsley
Lavender
Nasturtium for seeds and flowers
Though I had chives, but apparently not.

What have you got?

Re: ants and aphids ....i had NO idea

If the ants aren't on a precious plant but in bare earth then boiling water does the trick, particularly if you can pour it directly into the nest.

Re: New pond

Primula denticulata - sort of candelabra primrose - in pinks and yellows - loves the damp earth, spreads easily and is very pretty. I have a gunnera manicata too, which also loves the damp and papyrus.

Re: hotbeds on gardeners' world

The Heligan hotbeds are used for pineapples, but in Victorian times they used them for peas, strawberries etc. anything normally grown in the UK but out of season really. The pineapple pits were also glazed for added warmth.

Re: badger or fox?

It's so horrible to go to your hens/ducks in the morning and find them dead. Everywhere I've lived with poultry I've had this problem at least once, but inbetween attacks months or years can go by - it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Re: Auvergne Garlic

Could you perhaps pop it in a freezer for ten days which would be colder? I know nothing - it was just a thought.
