Herbs

Post: # 260084Post Henwoman »

I decided I'd take photos of the herbs I have - I thought there would be around six, but when I went searching I found eleven:

Rosemary
Mints
Lemon Balm
Basil
Sage
Thyme
Fennel
Coriander
Parsley
Lavender
Nasturtium for seeds and flowers
Though I had chives, but apparently not.

What have you got?

I had to run through Jekka McVicar's book just to make sure I didn't miss any. Here we go:

Wild garlic (ransoms)
Lavender (3 types)
Rosemary (2 types)
Chives (2 types)
Chamomile
Thyme (4 or maybe 5 types)
Marjoram/oregano (2 types)
Lemon balm
Lemon verbena
Bronze fennel
Angelica
Mint (3 types)
Hyssop
Parsley
Salad burnet
Sorrel
Bucklers Sorrel
Bergamot (I hope, it hasn't poked its head up yet so it may not have survived)
Sage (3 types)
English Mace
Garlic
Aloe vera
Wormwood
Borage
Balm of gilead
Sea kale
Cardoon
Wild strawberry
Sweet woodruff
Curry plant
Jasmine
Bay
Honeysuckle
Pelargonium
Elder
Comfrey
Dandelion
Nettle

According to Jekka, I can also include the following although I don't use them for anything:
Alchemilla Mollis
Ajuga reptans
Box
Lily of the valley
Solomon's seal
Primroses (can be used as a sedative apparently)
Houseleek - sempervivum (edible apparently but I can't quite face them myself)

Flat parsley and curly, mint, spearmint, thyme (grows like crazy), lavender, lemon balm, coriander, bay, garlic, chives, oregano, rosemary, cat mint, dill. Ginger, well, maybe, just an experiment. Nobody else mentioned dill. Fresh dill in salads is wonderful.

Has noone mentioned lovage yet? It's probably the one I use the most of. Makes a roast chicken a little bit more special.

I have some cumin growing, never grown it before, bit like vertically challenged Dill, has anyone grown this before, it is doing something, maybe it will flower soon, the leaves don't taste of much, expected a kind of warm flavour like the seeds but it tasted like tasteless dill

We've got about a dozen of the usual culinary herbs, although I don't think anyone has listed summer savoury, but also this year I'm growing caraway, as the OH likes caraway seed tea.

We have a handful of the above plus winter savoury. It's been fairly slow growing (now going into it's second year) so I don't know what it's like in winter yet but in summer it's like a tasty thyme.
