Mangel ale

Post: # 79888Post Stonehead »

Take 40lb of these...

...and follow my "how to" guide to turn them into six gallons of mangel ale. It's based on a recipe from the early 1700s and I haven't found any more recent recipes or experiments with the original so it's going to be interesting.

The wort tastes quite pleasant, if very sweet, so that's a good sign. Bad wort equals bad beer!

(Andy, feel free to draw on the "how to" guide if you want to put mangel ale in your brewing section alongside the nettle beer recipe. I haven't the time to transfer it over as I've umpteen chores to do.)

Ah - wondered where you were! Obviously all recovered then?

I had to go and look up mangel in the dictionary! It will be interesting to see how this brew tastes when it is done. How long will it take do you think?

The mangel ale is fermenting well - in fact, so well that it erupted out through the airlock despite having been in an open vat under muslin for two days first.

The flavour is much more beer/ale-like than I'd expected. Obviously, it's still sweet as it has another seven or eight days to go, but the OH took a swig of my sample and declared it "more-ish".

I might have to hold a mangel ale tasting session...

We're seriously considering having a beer and wine afternoon in a couple of month's time to invite all the people that have helped in the aftermath of my being knocked down by that van.

Mangel ale, potato wine, home-made bread and pickles, home-made pork pies, etc.

It depends on a few things, so watch this space... :cooldude:

So, we don't need to invite you then if you're already feeling the effects?

It wouldn't have bottled very well any way :cooldude:

I was doing it a favour really!

That is also the reason why I gave up doing the home brew
