I listened to the Ross/Brand thing on YouTube last night. Completely different to the way I had heard about it on the radio  .

I last bought 'women's' magazines when I was a teenager, to try to find something interesting to read. I couldn't find anything interesting in any of them, and haven't bought any since. I haven't bought a 'news' paper for several years because I know people who have been the subject of some of the lies published in them, and I just don't believe anything that's written in them now. They don't exist to tell us what is happening in the world, they exist to make a profit and to sell more papers than their competitors. I banned news programmes from the TV when my children were young because I didn't want them subjected to the acts of violence, etc., that are both talked about and shown repeatedly (giving the impression it's happening all the time), and I firmly believe that 'news' should not be broadcast until after the watershed. I stopped reading the news on Sky interactive about 3 years ago. I don't listen to the radio much, but when the news comes on, I just stop listening. I have to admit that since I rid my life of news programmes (and soap operas), I have been much, much happier and I feel like I have a far better grip on reality.

Ah, The Daily Mail. In the days when I was rebelling against the media (up until a year ago), all my 'information' came to me from the Mail, via my mum who could quote it chapter and verse. I'd read the Guardian for years, but outgrew it when it became completely consumer focused. Anyway, without the Guardian and with my mum spouting forth I was starting to get a warped view of the world. We didn't have a T.V. for years, but my son came home after uni bringing his telly and computer and I have since used them to keep more up-to-date, although this usually means watching the news a couple of times a week - though I do admit that the week when the US economy looked like collapsing I watched every night with something like a smug look on my face. Mainly though, I glean what I can from sites such as this which have far more relevance to me

i have a friend who is muslim who used to love going to southall with me cos I was the one who got stared at for being different. she's one of the biggest pacifists i know too.

i have met a gun-toting black man; but we were at uni and the gun was a water pistol.

i am a nutty pagan, but i too know some incredibly scary religious people, i dont like preachiness. my doings is my doings, your doings is your doings, let's all get along.

i am a marilyn manson fan to an extent, but i prefer Lordi or cradle of filth. OMG I MUST GO MURDER SOMEONE!!!

i hate the way the mail prtrays things... for instance immigrants. some of my neighbours and my own sister in law are immigrants, but they all contribute to society and are not hurting anyone, therefore i am in full support of them.

The one good thing about the Russel Brand (is he related to Jo Brand)/Jonathon Woss afair is that the media forgot all about the cwedit cwunch for 5 minutes.

I have never met a gun toting black man but I have met some gun toting white ones (I lived in an army town for years).

I don't know any Muslims who want to blow me up (well at least I don't know whether or not they want to blow me up), but I did have a white guy throw a grenade in my direction years ago (fortunately it wasn't a live one) oh, and some Irish guys did try to blow up our block of flats when I lived in central London in the 70's.

The only time I ever read the gossip mags is when I am waiting in the queue at the supermarket for hours. I can read the whole thing in roughly the time it takes one Asda checkout operator to process one average trolley's worth of goods. Thankfully I don't go to Asda very often.

Sorry but teenagers in hoodies? Actually I think it's the silver haired ones in hoodies you have to watch out for.

Rant away honey. You have a point.

How many gun toting black people have you met? Ok I have had one threaten to knife me if I didn't give him all my money, who actually ran of when I ran at him (I have no idea why I did it as he could have had a knife, but in the way he acted I very much doubt it & I had no way defending myself), I have met more black people than you shake forest at let alone a stick.
I was born and brought up in the London Borough of Lewisham and lived for a while in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, so my answer is .................. loads! In fact the reason we finally put the house on the market was because I had a gun pointed through my car window by the front seat passenger of another car (coincidentally, someone from the sub-continent) while I was driving on the North Circular, between the Crooked Billet Roundabout and the Tottenham flyover. Put me off going to Ikea for weeks! 2 weeks later, a large number of people in Birmingham and Waltham Forest were arrested under the prevention of terrorism act and a large number of weapons were seized.

And I suppose that since the ethnic minority in those two boroughs is White British, I guess you're more likely to find problem people in the black or asian communities, simply because there are so many of them in those particular areas. If you were to go to other parts of the country (even other parts of London) you wouldn't have the same issue. It's all down to scale. And of course, there were an awful lot more civilised people than not. It's just that the civilised majority aren't exactly news-worthy.

As for Marilyn Manson fans, they all seem to think that Marilyn Manson invented Goth. Poor dilusioned little teeny-goths.

Then you should have parental controls on your computer so they can't look it up

I agree with the parental controls thing - if only they were 100% effective *sighs*
My eldest two learned bad language, bad manners and bad attitude at school. I think they have lessons in it. Thankfully, they decided to keep most of it in the playground and kept their language clean and their manners good at home. :angel5: :angel1:

Kids will hear swearing and stuff that we don't want them to hear... you can't stop that entirely. I reckon that as long as you teach them that it is inappropriate to use bad language in certain places, and suggest to them that people often use bad language because they can't think of a better way to express themselves. I'm no angel myself when it comes to saying bad words!

As for the Brand and Ross thing, I reckon it's been blown out of all proportion - I hadn't heard it until Dave posted the link. Didn't think it was funny - they sound like a couple of teenagers mucking about on the phone. Seems the female has done well out of it anyway.
