Now this has to be a good line of inquiry......
As an ex parent helper / classroom assistant I feel qualified to speak on inner city schooling so if dunking them in water teaches them to swim would hanging the little darlings from the top of the doors aid upper body strength ?

How could you encourage a "growth spurt" ??

Dear Big Al,

Don't know if the's any research to back up your theory. Perhaps you could apply for lottery funding to continue your line of enquiry. By involving the children in measuring, recording and interpreting results you could cover a number of science objectives .....

...and of course some sadistic torture along the way. I mean what happened to teachers slapping your bare legs and throwing board rubbers at you. One of my woodwork teachers fastened a lads fingers in a wood vice until he confessed to the crime. He did do the crime of putting a compass through the fairy liquid bottle of pva glue then leaving it on the bench overnight.....

always wanted to join those REALLY BAD BOYS, but didn't have the nerve - more difficult too being a girl!

Dear invisiblepiper,

Why didn't you say? The REALLY BAD BOYS were always fantasizing about REALLY BAD GIRLS coming over to share their communal No. 6 at breaktime.

You'd have seen the ignominious sight of our backs as we fled in terror when one actually materialized,

Ina I know you find the small steps thing hard to believe but it's a bit like getting a new allotment, it's no good planning to dig the lot in one weekend. Make targets you can reach easily then you'll feel really pleased with yourself.

My target 2 years ago was to do 10 situps everymoring Mon-Fri. I'd tried everyday before and ofcours you miss some days so give up, M-F was much easier, if you didn't feel like it you know Sat wasn't far away. 10 situps was easy for me (doesn't really matter how many you do end up finding it easy and doing more anyway just set an easy number, even 2!!)

So you don't need loads of energy for your plan, but it actually gets the blood circulating, even if its 2 every other day it does you more good than none and you can't say you haven't time or energy so you just do it...and then wait and see how the small steps really make you feel better
