I think I may be over my allergy!

Post: # 111325Post Annpan »

Well one of my allergies -to garlic (my other is to penicillin)

I have basically avoided garlic completely for 2 1/2 years - since falling pregnant, but before that I only had garlic on very rare occasions and I had to take anti-hystamines and make sure I didn't have to work, or indeed, do anything the following day.

Well, over the past few weeks I have been experimenting again, and it seems it has gone Someone told me some things have 7 years to work out of your sytem - but this person was prone to talking bull, so who knows. Also the huge changes my body went through having a baby and anaphalaxis might have had an effect.

My next mission is to have an Indian carry out (that would always have me in bed within 2 hours and knock me for 6 the next day) If it has passed I don't need to read every little blumin ingredient of everything...a real nightmare when eating out, or visiting anyone.

Fascinating! I knew someone else with a garlic allergy - but not allergic to any other member of the onion family. Was this the case with you? Oh - I'm really pleased for you. All that garlicky FOOOOOOOD you can eat now!

Hi
That's good news. It certainly is possible to grow out of allergies. There are a number of things that I used to be allergic to and am not now. Only they've been replaced with things I never used to be allergic to  I'm not sure the 7 years has any scientific basis but is probably a fair average.

I also think that general state of health and, particularly, stress have a part to play. I find I get far worse allergic reactions when I am very stressed and many of my current allergies only started to present themselves during periods of stress.

So there you go, sit back, have a glass of wine and let someone else do the worrying. You know it makes sense!

Thanks everyone

MKG - yes, I am/was only allergic to garlic, not to any other member of the onion family. It is a very rare allergy (which makes it more difficult to avoid garlic or explain the allergy) But I did once stumble across a research paper done by an American university that explained that garlic has high sulphur levels and it is this that strips the lining away from the stomach, allowing all other toxins and chemicals to get straight into you system - not unlike a gluten allergy, where the gluten reacts with the lining of the intestines, rather than the stomach. I also suffer from mild reaction to anything containing sulphur dioxide (which is used as a preservative)

Of course - I didn't save the research paper, and I wish I had.

Garlic is so good for you, which makes it a really horrid thing to be allergic to.
