actually.. at the risk of being pedantic...

they are earlies and maincrop potatoes in the garden

but if i were asking himself to get some spuds from the shop I would ask for either new or ordinary potatoes...

I've always called them 'old potatoes' and so does everyone in my family. I thought it was absolutely normal, and then I happened to mention it to my bf and he creased up laughing and mocked me mercilessly. I wanted to see if I was the only one.

Ah well, there's at least a couple more of you.....

No - more than a couple. I've always said old potatoes, my parents said old potatoes and everyone else I know says old potatoes. It makes sense - if they're not new, then .....

I don't say old potatoes! To me spuds are 'old' when they are due to be chucked because they're practically beyond eating - and that could include 'new' potatoes as well.
