Not too sure where to start really?

If you know of a way to help save our planet, even just a small part of it put it here. Also if you want to ask how to help, or even if you want to promote your environmental organisation. All goes here.

Not too sure where to start really?

Post: # 107507Post shortie »

Hi everyone..

Hoping I've posted this in the right place, appolgies if not. I'm also hoping I really don't sound like a well intentioned, but not committed bod here either... I'm just pretty clueless on some things and was hoping for some sound advice where I think I won't be laughed at for trying to learn

Anyhow, it started today with me thinking about possible having a/multiple solar panel installed or possibly a wind turbine (do I mean that word?) on our roof. Reading previous posts on here I have a strong feeling that we don't (yet) live the lifestyle to make it possible to rely just on solar power

This has made me wonder a few things: How feasible is it to have solar power and be backed up by the national grid (does anyone else do this? How does it work out?). We live in London and I have no idea whatsoever how much energy we can expect to 'create' and can the panels be set up to store the energy generated while we're at work (can you tell I'm no engineer and a complete newbie to this? :? )

I would also like to work out how much energy the various bits of our house spend (I guess I'll need tp know this to work out how much benefit the panels will provide...) Can anyone recomend a cheap but decent one of those things (I don't know what they're called) that plug into the wall and the appliance then plugs into that...

Sorry for the waffle and very non-technical speak. Is there anything else I've not realised I need to think about?

I got one quite a while ago because they where half price at the time, I thought I knew how much power things used,I was wrong, I was quite surprised by some of the results.

Yes John, that's exactly what I meant, thank very much, I'll have a hunt around for a cheaper one now I know what they're called

I think I too will be quite surprised how much energy we use. I'm quite looking forward to doing our 'Energy Audit'.... :cooldude:
