Potatoes for Christmas

Post: # 102317Post JR »

Sorry to mention the C word so early in the year, but in around a months time it must be time to buy some spuds to chit ready to plant in July for Christmas lifting? :reindeer:

I read this last year sometime but I didn't know which varieties to start to investigate.

Any ideas?

I have my seeds of eskimo carrots ready, along with the winter cabbage. Sweeds, Kale and Parsnips are all seedlings.

2nd earlies seem to be the ones that the catalogues sell for "Second cropping". Carlingford, I think is one.

Maris Pier are the famous Christmas ones that I've tried.

They don't come out to buy until September from memory...which is about right , as it takes 6 weeks to chit, and as earlies they will have a crop 10 to 12 weeks from planting.

So you know how great Salsify is as a veg, what about Cavero Nero, great leaves all through the winter , then in Spring sprouting broccolli like flowers! Takes up half as much room as broccolli
