Hi All!

We moved in feb and now have a fantastic 50ft long garden....... which looks like a bomb has hit it. Its a long term let (LONG!) so we are making plans! The landlord did promise to rotovate the garden (In desperate need!) but this hasnt materialised. I start tomorrow with a scythe and tools to start clearing.

Long term we want a safe and healthy garden for our now 22month old, Kieran. I'd love a grass area but also fancy growing our own veg. Intrigued by the mushrooms! Think it will be a case of overhauling the garden this year and making ready for planting next year but we'll see!

Looking forward to listening to your words of wisdom!

Nicki x

Hi Nicki :hello2:

I think you're lucky - he would have rotovated in everything you would have wanted out.

Thanks all! Lovely to "meet" you!

Does this mean that if the garden was rotovated that the "rubbish" ie thick weeds etc would just end up deeper seated? I'm planning on cutting down as much as I can then started with good old fashioned digging (sob!). It WILL be worth it in the end! :flower:

Yes rotavators cut up all the weeds into hundreds of little cuttings which also grow :(

I have found that covering with old carpet (you might get some from freecycle) or thick black plastic is the best start. It starve the ground of light and makes it all really easy to dig over in the following year or in Autumn... a lot easier than trying to dig lush fresh grass.

Welcome to 'ish by the way

Hello,

Sounds like you've got some hard work ahead! But it's gonna be far more rewarding than slogging away in the gym, plus you get to eat the results!

Welcome,

Rach.

Hello Nicki!

A lot of our patch was farmyard when we started, full of rubble, and godness knows what! But at least when you've dug out a brick it doesn't grow back - unlike the XXX couch grass!
