Too late for tomatoes?

Post: # 101168Post hamster »

I've just acquired a hanging basket. If I got some tumbling tomato seeds or something, would I still have time to put them in now? What varieties would be best in a basket?

When I popped into a few garden centres on Sat. they had some nice wee tomato plants for sale, I think that 'tumbling tom' is one of the hanging basket varieties.

But you could plant seeds... my seedlings are only 2 inches tall anyway, and I planted them in early March :?

Glad I'm not the only one! Mine desperately need pricking out - I saw this morning that they've positively shot up in the last few days of sunshine...

Oh come on, end of lambing! I want to get into the garden!!!!

 planning to sow tumbling tom tomorrow when I get more soil/compost mixed up so I hope it's not too late too, see how we go - the others are 2 - 4 ins high - and all sown together, still indoors as yet, I guess they're just doing their own 'thang'

Sometimes things catch up quickly when you sow in later in the year, when it's warmer... Might just have to mollycoddle them a bit!

With tumbling toms I planted 1 packet and got 2 plants, not happy with this brought another packet and got another 5. They are about ready to go in. They were yellow ones.

The other varieties I grew are doing great (Marmande, Tigerella, Fantasio and Gardeners Delight), apart from the Black Cherry ones which I got 3 plants from 1 packet.

It seems the more unusual the tomato the more difficult to germinate. They all sat in a propagator on the window sill until big enough to transplant.

I was thinking of buying the tumbling ones from a garden centre next year I think as I think they were nearly £3 a packet. Perhaps use the propagator for something more productive.

This is my first year of planting anything, so thinking most seeds/plants would fail, I planted all my tombling toms and everyone has taken and is growing well, I don't have a greenhouse so all have been on windowseals and are now in my cold frame, loads of tomatos (I hope), plants everywhere.

you lucky thing! i was over confident and decided everything would grow so didn't plant all my seeds and now half the stuff has died or not germinated! still though....its all a learning curve.
