The magic of television (and Radio)-long post..

Post: # 93068Post Andy Hamilton »

Well here I am back in Bristol after what was possibly the hardest morning that I have endured. Well perhaps that is being a little melodramatic but it was certainly nerve wracking.

We decided to meet up on Sunday morning and go through everything we had to say and do a little more research, basically try to be more polished and professional. I sat at home waiting for Dave. It got to about 10.30 and I was starting to wonder where he was, knowing that he was going out for "one pint" the night before I thought the worst. My fears were not lessened when I called Dave's house to hear that he was still in bed. I asked his housemate to let him know I called and he should have been round my house. He called back 20mins later, still drunk after getting in at 6am. I wasn't happy :banghead:

We got the train down to London from Bristol costing the BBC £137 each. As I think my license fee has just ran out costing less than that I am thinking that I should renew it

They put us up in a fairly posh hotel in shepherds bush a stones throw (1 mile) away from Broadcasting house. It was full of people who seemed to think that people knew who they were, we didn't. It had dubbed its self as a 'green' hotel, the computer Tv was on Stand by, the shower was a power shower, they offered Soya milk and the air con was on all night - I should know that and nerves kept me up.

We got up at 6am both of us as nervous as hell. Had breakfast sent to the rooms because we were too early to have it in the restaurant (never been too early for breakfast anywhere). We knew that we had to be on the Today program and then BBC breakfast or in other words we would have to talk to somewhere between 5-10 million people about allotments.

There was a bit of confusion about the car they sent, I said that I would be happy to walk as it was just down the road. But as I thought the today program was miles away in the Radio theater not broadcasting house we accepted a car, but asked for it to be a 'green' car. A big merc with blacked out windows showed up. Did not seem that green.

We turned up at broadcasting house a mile away. Got ushered into the Today program office area and in walked some tall fella that I recognised a little, not sure who he was still. He walked back into the today studio and we saw John Humphries. We had to wait a while in the 'green room' then we were bought into the studio and told to sit down on this table opposite the tall man and John. They all had computer monitors but john had pushed his over, obviously prefers to work with paper! Sitting there was well strange it was like sitting in the middle of the news. I was going white with fear and feeling a little sick, I looked at Dave in the hope that he was feeling a little better and he was as white as a sheet. Oh dear!

Then we were on and we stumbled though. You canhear it here for another week. John H showed us out afterwards and I got him to sign a copy of our book that I am going to auction for charity after collecting a few more celeb names.

After a second breakfast we went to the TV studio and sat in a room with Dan Cruikshank and Cynthia a woman who was doing a new show about estates. Spoke to Dan as he was looking really nervous, this had the affect of making me feel less nervous. He was very interesting although I could not always hear what he was saying. He looked at the book and seemed to genuinely like it. I got him to sign it too. I told him that Tony Benn drinks loads of water before question time so that he can concentrate on something to keep him alert. He got up and helped himself to some water.

In walked Mark Curry (I think thats his name) the bloke that used to be on Blue peter and Janey lee Grace (radio 2 steve wright and writer of Perfectly natural books) I spoke to her a bit as we have the same agent. MY head was working overtime here and I did not get them two to sign the book, simply as I was unsure who Cynthia was and did not want to ask someone who might just be on for a 'real story' and offend her. Equally I did not want to pass the book over to Mark Curry and Janey and offend cynthia if she was a little bit famous. What an idiot!

Then we were on and sat in this room that looked like a warehouse covered in white paint with a dirty sofa stuck in the middle of it, no camera men just an autocue and stuff beamed onto the wall behind the sofa. All that high tech look is pretty much smoke and mirrors. We were called up to sit on the sofa's and chatted to the lady a little before we were on, she had a temperature first thing apparently but was ok now. The bloke looked up and picked up our book, he said ooh gardening I like that sort of thing. "do you garden" I asked, "no, but I like the idea of it". Wasn't really sure what to make of that.

Then off we went all a bit of blur and it was not until just now as Emma my girlfriend pointed out that I realised we had a few opportunities to plug the site and the book and we did not menton ish!! Ah well, lessons learnt. Will have to make sure we do on ITV west news the next thing we have to do on Thursday.

So thats that, I now tired and trying to make sense of the less then 10 mins of my life where I was famous. I wonder if that means I am owed another 5 mins.

I thought John Humpries ws good.. and not narky like he is with politicians - sounded interested.. asked reasonable questions.

the breakfast telly interviewers clearly didn't really have a clue, but I thought you did good... pity you forgot the plug!

tis all fun, promotion and spreading the word of ish. how cool is that.

John Humpries was a really nice chap so was Dan Cruikshank and the Breakfast lady. The others could be stressed or anything on that day, being aloof on one day doesn't necessarily mean they are always like that.

Red - it was very, very cool.

Just listened again and you did great! The whole thing sounds rather intimidating though. Have you had any more invitations to appear anywhere?

Oh yes they are! And some are even worse.

Still, there are some lovely ones, too, and most of them are in the behind the scenes roles. (I'm ex-Beeb myself.)

A few tips for next time — and I amazed your agent didn't prepare you better.

1. Do your research. Know the name and format of the program, the producer's name and contact information, the host's or interviewer's name/s, whether it is live or recorded, know the time the show goes out or is taped, and where you will be interviewed.

2. Know the topic and how long you'll be given to talk. Talk to the producer, then make a list of possible questions and answers prior to the interview, then check that with the producer. Make short, cogent notes on the information you want to get across, and run through a couple of personal anecdotes that support what you're trying to say. Run through the notes several times, then practice giving the information as answers.

3. Fax or email a one-page overview about you, listing areas of expertise, experience, any awards, publication titles, key achievements etc. and contact information. At the very least it ensures they get your title and name correct, while hopefully it also gives the researchers some pointers for the right direction to take!

4. Always be at the studio early, have your contact names and phone numbers with you. If possible, meet the host/interviewer in advance so you and they can ask any questions while familiarising each other with your voices (especially important in a busy studio with multiple guests, two-ways to other studios, cues coming in from producers, etc).

5. Look appropriate and act professionally. Take a toothbrush and brush before the interview—I've seen people with food stuck in their teeth that becomes hugely obvious with the cameras rolling. If you're travelling a distance to the interview or they want a particular look, it can be worth having an extra set of clothes. Makeup should be muted and hair combed into place — unless it's appropriate to look like a haystack. Smart casual or be-suited professional are best for studios, for outside broadcasts check with the producer what they're trying to show. (When we were live on GMTV the boys and I had to look "rural" so we dressed in boilersuits, wellies and old hats.)

6. When you're being interviewed, focus on the interviewer, be concise and factual, don't drift from the point, and only introduce anecdotes when appropriate. If the producer and interviewer are any good, then you may be briefed along the lines of having a total of two minutes with a couple of 15-second answers and a longer 30-second anecdote. (With practice, you can talk sensibly and cogently while also counting time backwards in your head, which means the interview finishes on the dot and the producer asks you back in future because your making their job easier.)

7. Practice, practice and practice possible questions and answers. Avoid complex explanations. And try to look like you're enjoying yourself (ie don't do the Gordon Brown grimace of death) without going overboard (Blair's Cheshire cat grin).

8. Don't overdo the plugs. Keep it subtle. So, you might say how your book was partly inspired by the forum, prompting the interviewer to ask further if they want. Or say something about how you owe a lot to the very helpful people on Ish. (Then we'll all feel lovely and tingly as well!!)

Hope this helps.

(PS I once did a screen test for Tomorrow's World but decided it wasn't the thing for me. Weird thinking about it now.)

I afraid it was as much us not getting ourselves prepared properly really. Dave had the questions for BBC breakfast and could not remember them by the time he told me and when I was told for the today show, we were prepared just very, very nervous so the preperation went out the window somewhat.

But that is really good advice stoney, cheers for that. We have a few more things coming up. Like BBC Bristol thats thank fully the only live thing, so your post will help us for that.

Wow, great info Stoney! What were you and the boys on telly for?

I must admit I have no idea who the presenters were on BBC breakfast - I rarely watch anything like breakfast or morning chat type telly but usually the presenters are fairly well known people.

Andy were you invited to appear BECAUSE of the book, in which case I am surprised the presenters didn't mention it, specifically rather than just vaguely like they did. No point being interviewed because of your book then not getting a plug!

Anyway it sounds like it was an exciting experience and soon you two will be old hands at all this telly business!

On GMTV on the occasion I referred to, it was when we were out of water. But we've also been on quite a few programmes over the years. I really should put them all on YouTube so people can go "yech!" what a bunch of swineherds!

It's quite strange being on the other side of the camera, microphone, notebook, etc.

Oh, another thing I thought of — but Andy shouldn't have to worry about this one. For one of the interviews we did, the crew wanted a long walkthrough to set the scene but had only bought enough lights for a single interview.

Guess who has enough floodlights to illuminate the Forth Bridge?

I set the crew up with enough lights to do everything they wanted in one long live take, cutting from camera to camera as the interviewer walked through. (She's now on Channel 5 BTW—Isla Traquair—so you may have seen her.)

I was on News24 about tuition fees when I was 17... they wanted a boy and girl from my sixth form, so the sixthform head gathered all of us on the student council (as we were more 'trustworthy' I suppose) and took us to meet the producer. she wanted two people to give views, honest ones and interviewed us all...
there were tewo lads on the council. one was totally apathetic and wasnt heading to uni anyway and the other didn't want to be on TV so made himself out to be somewhat of a raving nutcase, politically speaking. So, it ended up that myself and another girl were chosen.
she did well, I got nervous and made a total arse of myself- btut I still got my 30 secs of fame lol!!!
oh how I love my tea, tea in the afternoon. I can't do without it, and I think I'll have another cup very

:pale: oh god please tell me you're kidding. my mum has it on video....well, she thinks she does. it's actually hidden at the back of my wardrobe. I can't bear to destryoy it though, but this way it stops her bringing it out at family gatherings and prolonging my pain....
