I was never really into his stuff as a wee laddie, but I did have the pleasure of meeting him when he was invited onto the Good Ship Liverpool when we were in Sri Lanka in 1995.

He gave a long and interesting talk in the hangar to the ships company. I had just bought Mike Oldfield's Songs of Distant Earth which was inspired by Clarke's then recent book. I got chatting to him after the talk and he signed the sleeve of the CD for me, admitting that he had only just heard that Oldfield had written the music after being inspired by his book.

One thing I do remember him telling me was that he was 20% functional on land but 80% functional underwater! Keen diver and that was the attraction for Sri Lanka. Apparently.
