Is there a right way to orient runner bean trenches?

I usually line them up north - south so both sides get the sun but then neighbouring plants are shaded.

If I put them east - west at the north end of the vege plot will the beans on the north side be ok?

I can't answer your question I'm afraid, but I am wondering about trenches. Everyone is talking about digging trenches for runners. I have always just popped the beans in the ground and they grew. What are the trenches all about?

I think it's recommended north /south for all allotment alignment, as you say the maximum area will then be exposed E/W

So you know how great Salsify is as a veg, what about Cavero Nero, great leaves all through the winter , then in Spring sprouting broccolli like flowers! Takes up half as much room as broccolli

Sorry to hijack, I'm thinking about laying out my veg plot and have been pondering a similar question. Do you go for long rows north to south, or lots of short rows north to south (ie bed length runs east to west)

Is it a really stupid question or am I finding excuses not to dig the veg patch?!

I've gone for east-west beds with north-south rows. It maximises the reach of sunlight and helps reduce wind (prevailing wind is north-westerly).

Fortunately, the horse sand arena I converted was a long rectangle extending north-south with a windbreak on two sides, so it was easy to fit my bedding plan into it.

I am glad you asked that because I have been pondering the same question.
