Alternative to Marmite....?? Love it or Hate it

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Alternative to Marmite....?? Love it or Hate it

Post: # 84076Post mew »

Hi

I love it.... but I hate KRAFT!! who own them and as such havent eaten it for about 12 months or so now.

Does anyone know of a good alternative or maybe their own recipe I could try. My toast simply isnt the same without it

Thanks

Meridian Foods yeast extract - not identical, but near as dammit!
And not THAT expensive - £2.80 for 340g :dave:
http://solarwind.org.uk - a small company in Sussex sourcing, supplying, and fitting alternative energy products.
Amateurs encouraged - very keen prices and friendly helpful service!

Red - Kraft are the second biggest food producer in the world (Nestle is no 1) they have the ability to fix prices for both raw ingredients and for their finished products - They control the prices, nutritional value of food in our supermarkets, and don't pay a fair price to farmers for the raw ingredients - just as a matter of principle, I try to avoid Nestle and Kraft products.

Now I didnt know that about Kraft, and didnt know marmite was made by craft. I know sainsburys do their own version of marmite which I had as a kid, and remember it being quite good, dont know about the ethics though, but I think sainsburys are better than some others.
P.S dont go for the American Vegemite if you were thinking of it, its revolting and tastes nothing like marmite.

well according to my extensive research... (I looked it up in wikipedia)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite

marmite is now owned by Best foods, who merged with unilever in 2000.

so - you might have a gripe against unilever.. but if its kraft you dont like.. dont eat vegemite.
me? going to carry on eating marmite.

Doh, so it is! Never thought to actually look at the jar. For some reason I thought it was Sanitarium. Got earlymorningitis I think.

An other alternative could be a gluten free version of the spread? We have something here in NZ called Vege spread which is made by Freedom Foods which is Australian made. Perhaps there is a similar product in the UK?
