Currant sticks

When do you take cuttings from currant bushes? I got given some rooted sticks last autumn, but none have survived.
Has anyone got any currant bushes (red, black or white, or even raspberry canes) in this area that I could take some cuttings from? (Canterbury NZ)

I took cuttings from the currant bush at our house in spring, and they all took. (much to my surprise!) I cut sticks about 10cm long, removed most of the leaves, and just stuck them in a pot of potting mix, and watered them whenever I remembered.

I could try taking more cuttings and post them to you, if you like? Can't say what kind of currant they are though, as it's our first (and last!) year in this house... pm me if you'd like me to send some.

I used some red currant prunings as row markers for seeds last winter and half of them wound up taking root. So you could just take cuttings once the leaves have gone and put them somewhere the soil will stay moist.

well the ones I got in the post (thanks) at least half have struck, the other half might have, I will leave them in pots till they have a half decent root system and then plant them out.
