Ola from a very wet Portugal

Post: # 76968Post lorrayne »

Hello all just a few words to introduce myself - my better half & I live in Elvas in Portugal where we manage an olive & orange farm and a self catering holiday farmhouse. We are trying to be as SS as possible and to re- introduce some animals to the farm - we have inherited lots of straw bales so are keen to try growing some veg in them.
Its a great site - and we hope to post lots of ?'s and if poss answer a few as well
Cheers

Hi Lorraine, welcome to the Ishers! In case it makes you feel better - it's very wet here, too...

Hello and welcome! I wish I could grow olives but it's a bit too cool in this part of France.

Hi all and thankyou for the warm welcome.
This is the norm at this time of year - but when it rains it rains.
There are 46 acres of olives but luckily we have a guy that grazes his sheep here and in return he looks after most of the olives - they have been picking for the last three weeks and could continue for another 3 weeks at least - its all done by hand with long sticks - its hard work.
I have seen that in th UK they are planting small olive groves mainly in the cornwall area I wonder if there any at all in Brittany ?
We lived in Belgium for three years then looked around europe to buy somewhere and settled on Portugal, we bought a ruin and began the slow process of planning permission, finding a builder etc but the architect is so slow we were getting a bit desperate and we saw this job advertised, applied and were lucky enough to get it so we have put our project on hold for the time been.
cheers

I'm sure there is the odd olive tree in someone's conservatory! I think the climate here is generally too wet for them and not enough sunshine. Ditto citrus fruit!
