Scammers about!

Post: # 65403Post Martin »

We have discovered some shameless scammers - they tried it out on us - and thankfully, failed miserably!
They employ chatty, friendly, telephone sales ladies, who call up and offer you "advertising" in such august periodicals as "Crime Prevention"...........you tell them you're NOT interested - a few weeks later the bills for £350 start arriving..........this morning we received a "notice of intended legal action".
Following a pleasant chat with our friends in trading standards, and a swift bit of Googling - it appears they are a particularly nasty bunch of crooks based in the North. So if you're approached, tell them you KNOW they're a bunch of crooks, and if they have the temerity to then demand money with threats, go straight to your local trading standards people - they're great!
Here's a forum full of posts about them! - http://portal.aguk.net/2006/05/publishing-scams/ :dave:
http://solarwind.org.uk - a small company in Sussex sourcing, supplying, and fitting alternative energy products.
Amateurs encouraged - very keen prices and friendly helpful service!

I've had a few calls like this in the past. They were claiming to be from the local fire station or the local police station thanking me for placing an ad with them in their charity magazine. They usually said that a colleague had agreed to place the ad and they were calling me for the details of our business. What a cheek!

We had a simlar one a couple of years ago when we started trying to set up a business - luckily we realised in time. We also had another offering us an advert on a wall planner and telling us that we were the only business of that type in this area being advertised - when it arrived we found that there were several others - who'd obviously been told the same thing - so we refused to pay and before we had the chance to contact Trading Standards we received call telling us they were scammers. The next time they called to demand money we told them that we knew what they were doing and that we were reporting them - funnily enough we never heard from them again!!
The best plan is to choose your advertisers - DON'T let them choose you!!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

We get emails from people in different countries in Africa saying that they have a lot of money tied up in banks in different countries and need our bank details to help get the money out of the country. You read of so many people that have fallen for scams and lost thousands of dollars.

The other one that's doing the rounds in the UK at the moment is a letter saying that you have won a prize. Just send one hundred pounds "admin" fee or similar to.....

Big con.

Well I don't know about you guys but I've just received a letter telling me I've won the Spanish lottery! Woo hoo going to live my self sufficient dreams now

Sadly it could fool some people, except for the fact that the print quality is obviously from a cheap inkjet.

Well I will live out my self sufficientish dream, I'll shred and compost it and give the stamp to my mum because she collects them :)
