fruit varieties?

starting to think about planting the fruit area.. we plan on blackcurrents, redcurrents, raspberries, gooseberries (dessert and cooking) cultivated blackberries, and loganberries


anyone recommend any particular varieties on any of these?

I can only advise you on raspberries because I bought 4 different varieties.

Autumn fruiting/remontant
I don't recommend Golden Bliss - yellow and tasteless.
I do recommend Zeva - the fruit doesn't always come off the plant whole but who cares - tastes lovely and was fruiting up to October/Nov.

Summer fruiting
I don't recommend Meeker - fruit small and not a lot of them; lots of the canes seem bare
I do recommend Rubaca - lovely big tasty fruit which come off the cane whole - bit of a thug this plant though!

Unfortunately my redcurrants were labelled just that and came from the supermarket! They fruit well though.

I think there is not much in it for currents,, but ltos of choice in raspberreis and gooseberries.. ah well

I like the sound of the rubaca - bit of a thug might survive attacks from goats and chooks

This year I planted raspberries, cherries, a blueberry, and a gooseberry. Can't remember the variety names now, just been trying to get them to grow something green.

All have grown some greenery (they were dry-roots) except the gooseberry, it never has sprouted, I think it is a goner. My silly dog pulled it out and carried it around after I planted it, she thought it was just a stick, which she likes to chew. So I had to re-plant it. Poor thing probably couldn't take the stress! :)

Next spring I'm going to put in some type of black berry and more raspberries and blueberries. AND a fence to keep OUT the dog!

I planted 5 raspberries a few years ago and they are an absolute jungle now despite being chopped back every year. I don't remember the variety but they produce from June until the frost (well into October for my garden) and I just sit and eat them constantly every evening they are so lovely.

Thjey shoot into the garden alot so I dig up the shoots and pot them for my friends. All these shoots take nomatter how harsh I am so if you want me to post you a couple you are more than welcome!!

I might try to hunt for the ticket that tells me the variety tonight....

Hi Mare Owner. Not sure if you are aware, but blueberries like an acid soil. A good idea is to put pine needles as a mulch.
