Brocolli question??

Post: # 62111Post mew »

Hi

My brocolli is coming along a treat - some a almost ready for the pot but I noticed that from the main stalk, below the large one in the middle are small brocolli heads forming - albeit these are prob no more than an inch in diameter. Being a first time veg grower Im not sure what to expect, but I thought you one got 1 brocolli head per plant - is the right or am I completely off the mark? If I am right then why is the main plant producing little off springs?

Thanks again

Most broccoli will produce side shoots. If you cut the main head and leave them they will develop into more heads, not as big as the main one but well worth having, I like a bonus crop.

Hi Mew, I think that you have planted purple or white sprouting broccoli and that, the side shoots, is what you pick and cook the more you pick the more that grows, it seems very late for psb, they tend to crop feb--april!
I'm just about to plant next years crop and they are 6-9 inches tall.

I think you your mixing it up with what you see in the shops being sold as broccoli is in fact calabrese with a large head, psb is much nicer it not easy to retail because it doesn't travel or store well

Hi Kimbobill

Yes its calabrese (marathon).

Ive harvested a couple of heads (ones in the pot as we speak for tonights dinner). Its probably about 6 or 7 inches in diameter.

So from what you're saying, I will get side shoots - how big do them normally get as at the moment they're tiny.

One of them which I have picked has no side shoots but the main head in the middle was pretty big - ive left it in the ground to see if its sprouts anything. Is this was I should be doing?

Thanks

That's what I do, I usually get side shoots a couple of inches in diameter from my calabrese once I've removed the main head. It doesn't always work but I like to think of it as a free meal when it does.
