Morning from the Scottish Borders

Post: # 61377Post hoomin_erra »

Hey All

I'm down in the Scottish Borders, just south of Dunbar. Been making james for a few years now, and just starting on the wines, and possibly cheeses soon.

Down here is great, i've found abandoned orchards of Wild Pear, Apples, Plums, Black Cherries, and Red Cherries. Elderberry, Rowan, Hawtorn, Rosehip, and brambles bound all over. (Several buckets each every season) Friendly farmers means i get a go at their raspberries and strawberries in exchange for a few jars of jam.

I have questions, but those are for other threads. See you there.

Hello Hoomin-erra

I'm up in Aberdeenshire. You are lucky to have such friendly farmers in your area :flower:

Hello there and welcome. It still amazes me that hardly anyone picks fruit from the wild. I have seen cherry trees full next to a supermarket selling Turkish cherries, madness.

Believe me, nothing gets left around here. If i find anything, the weekend is spent gathering as much as i can, and bringing it home. Drives my OH to distraction, but we have shelves of Jams and syrups. No more buying cordial for the kids or jam for the house.

Also just found a stand of edible chestnut tree's.

Girl? No girl here. Not the last time i checked anyway!!

But yes, i feel that way as well. If it's just sitting there rotting it can't hurt to ask if you can help yourself in exchange for some of the results.

Hiya, and welcome!

And if there's ever anything you can't manage - too many plum trees, or apple or anything like that, give us a shout, and Shirlz and I will come zooming down to you and help you pick it! (And eat it, goes without saying. )

We do have plenty of raspberries here, and in some areas bramble and blaeberries. I'm also lucky to have access to black currants, and red currants grow wild in one particular spot. But I miss the apple trees etc from where I used to live... :?
