Tasmanian rainforests

Post: # 61186Post Cornelian »

I'm back after almost 2 weeks of a photography jaunt about Tasmania, mainly in the rainforests - will get up a web page of some of the photos soon. I first saw the Tasmanian cool rainforests about 12 years ago and was dumbstruck by their beauty and have been a rabid fan ever since. I took about 5,000 photos but won't bore you with them all.

Oh, and I saw (and used) so many composting toilets it wasn't funny! LOL Some were terrific, some were just appalling.

I had a horrid run-in with the Tasmanian cave spider, which is a twice the size of a man's hand, but I ended up running too fast to take a photo of that.

Gidday

Ewe jokers have a devil down there to don't you.

But yes, a good bush, well that's what we call a rain forest over here, is certainly beautiful alright.

At least it looks alive. The species in now edging very close to extinction because of a rampant virus which causes a deadly facial cancer - no one knows what is causing it or how to stop it. They are establishing non-infected breeding colonies of the beasties on isolated islands in case they need to repopulate the main island at some point in the future.

I am sure Wombat is pleased to hear that! Mrs Wombat may not be so keen though!

That spider looks like something out of Alien, I would have run too...and those that know me will know why that will be some feat for me!

I normally love piders. But have been warned to stay clear of those with red on their backs. Is that one poisonous?

We saw heaps and heaps of wombats - mostly dead on the side of the road - Tasmania is infamous for the level of its roadkill because of the high level of wildlife and the forests which are so close to the roads. But we saw some cute live ones, too - once stopping to allow one to amble its slow way across the road.

The wallabies are suicidal - need to watch for them by the side of the road because once they see the car they panic and jump right in front of it!

I feed wallaby to my cats - it is great meat for humans and pets a like.
