Comrade Dad

Do you think The Good Life could be remade, with me or Dave playing Tom Good (maybe not!)? If you have seen something on TV or heard something on the radio recently that you want to talk about, tell us here.

Comrade Dad

Post: # 60151Post Andy Hamilton »

Does anyone remember Comrade Dad? It was a sit com in the 1980's starring George Cole (Minder). The basic premise was that the then USSR had somehow managed to get all of the leaders of the UK into a bunker and locked them in. They then parachuted in loads of soldiers and had a bloodless coup taking over Britain.

Most people were cynical about their new leaders but George Cole was a real comrade. I was only pretty young when it was on, but it really was a great parody of what was happening during the Soviet era. They had obviously fake pictures of the great leader (who had been dead for years) in the newspapers, they had to wait for 3 years for a car and they even touched on the fact that party leaders were more equal than others.

Have vague memories of my dad letting me stay up and watch this.
I thought it was great, but it obviously arrived on telly just as the cold war was ending and lost out on a second series.

I have a vague image of a gray work-suited morose George Cole ... but then he was usually pretty morose - certainly don't make them like that anymore!

It is certainly one of the those sit-coms that is just a vague memory. I emailed the BBC to see if they planned to repeat it or bring it out on DVD at any point, it would be good to see it again to see if, without the backdrop of the cold war, it is still any good.
