Spinning at the 'Show

Post: # 53318Post Wombat »

As some of you know, I spin my own home grown cotton and go to spinning classes of a Thursday night. Anyway there is evidently a thing happening at the Royal Easter Show where they are going to spin cotton and weave it into a tea towel, get it painted by Ken Done and auction it off. This is happening Wednesday arvo and I was asked to put my name down, and I have been accepted. So I will be the token bloke in amongst a dozen or so lady spinners. Should be interesting to see how it goes.

Since the Easter Show won't mean much to you lot over there, here is a link to give you an idea what it is about!

Hi Wombat! Good for you!

I've recently bought a 2nd hand spinning wheel for spinning my own wool, but it needs a bit of work, so been held up a bit really!

Auckland are having their Easter show this weekend too but we wont be able to go, we have guests arriving tomorrow afternoon!

Make sure someone takes a photo of you so we can all see what you did!

Have a great weekend!

Hey Nev, if you wanted to add to your CV, you could get a job as a spin doctor.

Thanks Guys,

Probably enough for a pair of socks or two. It is a running joke at spinning, they keep asking to see the queensize bedsheets!

Well I have to report that it was a great day. The process was on radio 702 ABC Sydney, and I got to meet the presenter, shook hands with Ken Done, Got to sign the tea towel, we raised $5000 for an outback childrens charity and I made a complete idiot of myself on ABC radio!

There were 12 of us spinning but my bobbin was the first to come off so the presenter comes over and grabs it, sticking a microphone in my face and asks me to describe the spinning process I had just done - so after an incoherent paragraph or two he asks me how I got into spinning. So I filled him in about my cotton growing efforts and about making a home grown garment, he asks me why I want to do that and my response is - I'm a weirdo! - technically correct and broke everybody up but not the best thing to say on radio. I went on to tell him a bit about the food growing and some of the other stuff we do but I don't think i made any great points.

I find your brains turn slightly to mush when someone puts microphone in front of you!

You are not alone. I contacted a few papers about the Unfarepak campaign and my brain just went to jelly. Even though it was a subject that I knew a lot about, I just couldn't get the words out.

Well done for going to the show and I'm sure that the listeners appreciated the sense of humour. Much better than some dull boring long winded explanation that'd just leave them thinking "this guy's a wierdo!". At least you're honest.

Nev,
I can't believe that was you - my mother rang this afternoon and told me about someone who had been on the radio talking to RG about self sufficiency and spinning cotton. Wait till I tell her I met you virtually yesterday via a UK forum - will blow her mind all together!
