How come there is so many Aussie's and Kiwi's on this site??? Is it a down under based forum??
Also i was led to believe by Wingin Pom's who came back, that NZ houses are terrible damp full of condensation and no insulation, so is there no " Green " movement down that way???

There has been New Zealand and Australian visitors to the site since it first started. I am also lead to believe that John Seymores book on self sufficiency did well down there. Also there are 3 self sufficiency magazines.
Not sure about the terribly damp thing and no green movement - someone else will have to answer that. Although it could be said that English people live in tiny terrace houses with no gardens and we all eat junk food. It is a matter of perception. I assume that the 'winging poms' that came back did not have a good time of it all over there and focused on a few negative experiences that they encountered. It does not mean to say that is exactly what it is like down there.
Oh and to answer your first question, no its a UK based forum but we have always tried to appeal to all nations as much as we can. On the main site when I write about growing herbs (for example) I tend to say when there is no chance of frost instead of in May or June.

Re the damp houses, some of the older ones can be damp, newer ones are better insulated etc.

Ah now! The UK has some beautiful scenery, each country has it's own merits. I've yet to see the South Island but I understand it is outstanding!
The climate can be similar to the UK, but it can be very humid, probably where the damp comes in!
Where we are gets fairly cold in winter but nothing like the UK, we don't get snow in Hamilton but we get some frosts and lots of fog, summer can be very hot!

Is full of stuff regarding people who for some reason or other couldnt hack it, but in one thread i remember they were saying that NZ houses were terrible and NZ wages so bad and heavily taxed that most people couldnt afford to improve them.
Me..i would love to go to NZ or say Tasmania in OZ and then forget about the rest of the world. I write regulary to an ex school friend who lives in Mandura just outside Perth but that place is far to hot for me.

Well, I think its cos we can't be bothered re-inventing the wheel. If there is a site that meets our needs, what's the point of making another one? We are here to show support for the goals, and encourage others who are striving for similar results.
Can't help but feel sorry for the folks who are happy to own their green movement and then doubt it has moved beyond their shores.... not much of a movement if that's the case.
Next you'll be suggesting our soldiers don't move either...

I think we get so used to the central heating and double glazing in the UK and I do miss it sometimes.
Our house here isn't too bad, we ended up buying some storage heaters to warm the place up.
It is the damp that makes you feel cold, get rid of the damp and the place warms up.
We have electirc blankets on the beds too.
A lot of electricity I know but although we've got used to the dealing with the temperatures I don't like being cold!
Compared to British housing the buildings to me seem flimsy, hard ot find proper brick built houses. But the new houses being built are taking that all into consideration so I'm sure that will take care of the problem
The older houses are probably harder to heat, but then the Kiwis are made of sterner stuff and perhaps us pommies need toughening up a bit and need to stop expecting so much!

If you got permanent residency you could live here indefinitely, the only reason that we will apply for citizenship is because of our son, he's turning into a real Kiwi kid.
You could always do all the applying for residency where you are, get it all sorted before you come, you don't have to be living here to apply for it.
