Oh dear! :shock:

Then it poses the question how can we dispose of them safely?

I think I read something here about there being no facilities for recycling bulbs, I saw a link for ideas of using the old style bulbs.....but I'm still finding my way around so can't remember where I saw it! :?

In the UK IKEA used to take these back. Some councils also offer the same service, more will in the next couple of years as the WEEE directive comes into force properly.
You can always send the back to the manufacturer:)
