Onions and carrots

Post: # 49101Post the.fee.fairy »

I want to plant onions and carrots in my front garden.
I've got carrot seeds, onion sets, and spring onion seeds.

So when do i sow what? Do i get the onion sets in first, then put carrot and spring onion seeds in round them? Or do i plant the carrots first and wait for them to start growing and put the onion sets in the spaces?

But confuzzled on the logistics of this one..

Hi Fee

Guess your on about companion planting?

If I were you I´d plant the sets and then mix the carrot and spring onion seeds in your hand and sow in a line about 4 inches away - I´m no expert though.

Gidday

Your onions need at least 6 months growing and are normally planted in mid winter, down here at least.

ta jack.

I reckon that if i put the sets in tomorrow, then in about a month's time sow the seeds like Clara said, then they should be good.

I am talking about companion planting, and, as they're going in the front, people can't see the carrots and onioons to steal them, and the greenery on top looks quite attractive.

Big hint Fee.......

Leave plenty of room for your onions otherwise the carrots will shade them and you will get pickling onions! I'm speaking from experience here.

From what i can see most of the companion planting stuff, here in Aus at least is crap!

I would plant a lot more than 4" away or the carrot greens will swamp your onions and not let any light or air in.

From what I have read, onions hate weeds around them so they need to be kept clear of weeds (or carrot tops). I guess a foot away would be OK.

Jack, are you talking about growing onions from seed? I plant onion sets (baby onions) in April and harvest in July/August.

Edited to say: Sorry Nev, I'm repeating what you said!

Gidday

Well over here the old saying goes, plant onions on the shortest day and harvest on the longest. I planted my plants, seedling call uit what you want, in July and they are not yet read for harvest. But our summer only started last Saturday instead of in December.

Veg thieving is not that much of a problem, but most people only tend to use the back garden for it. We do have kids who sit on our wall when they're 'playing out' so i don't want to have visible stuff that might just be too much of a temptation.

Much like anywhere else, we have the local yobs and vandals, and if they nick my veg i'll kill them! I just don't want anything that looks tempting!!

Right, so...plant the onion sets fairly well spaced today.
In a month's time, spread the seeds and thin so that the carrots have at least 6" room away from the onions.

I don't mind too much if i get small onions - i love pickled onions!!

I didn't think kids ate vegetables these days, much less recognise one by its leaves!
