101 health uses for kitchen herbs

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

Post: # 46867Post pskipper »

1. Sage and Thyme tea for sore throats

2. Garlic as a decongestant

3. Sage as an aid to digestion

4. Turmeric to help shift a cold

5. Mint as a calmative

6. Garlic for general health (okay I'm repeating things but they have different uses)

7. Mint to counter gassy indigestions (relaxes the muscles at the top of your stomach so the gasses drift out instead of belching out).

8. Ginger and Mustard for foot baths

9. Liquorice root aids digestion and helps clean your teeth (My mum loved feeding it to us).

11. Ginger to stop morning sickness, although some believe that morning sickness is good to get the body rid of any toxins that might effect the unborn. (and no Emma is not pregnant  )

12. Yarrow - good for all sorts of stuff the greeks would never go into battle without it.

14. Chamomile tea for calming, relaxation and helping sleep
15. Cloves as a local anaesthetic - get a miniature bottle of vodka, tip out the vodka and half-fill with cloves then put the vodka back (drink the vodka you can't fit back in the bottle). Leave it somewhere dark for a couple of months, giving it a shake now and then when you remember. A couple of drops of that will take away toothache, or gargle a little bit to numb a sore throat.
16. Chewing fennel seeds clears bad breath

Andy, your obsessed with pregnancy  :?

Ginger is good for any kind of sickness, tummy ache and nausea

Rasperry leaf tea is amazing for pregnant women (some wild animals eat it when they are pregnant too) if you want statistics, there was a recent study in Norway (I think) that said women who drank raspberry leaf tea (at least 3 mugs a day and only after 34 weeks) were 50% less likely to need stitches after the birth - through either episiotomy or a tear.hmm nice. I drank it lik it was going out of fashion when I was pregnant and my labour officially only lasted 45mins... I say officially, don't get me started.

Garlic is great for everything, unless your alergic to it (which I am) which is very rare and may be linked to penecillin allergy (I read something a while ago, but can't remember where and I have since discovered I am dangerously allergic to penicillin  )

A clove buried in soil next to plant allegedly stops green fly (in houseplants) - or is it purley human health benefits you are looking for?

Garlic helps fight infection such as flu, colds, gastroenteritis, thrush and clod sores

It reduces raised blood cholestreol levels eating 1-2 FRESH garlic cloves a day can decrease blood cholestreol levels by about 10%

May lower risk of stroke as it helps blood flow freely studies show that garlic helps dilate blood vessels and reduces the risk of blood clots

Aids good circulation

lowers high blood pressure

can help diabetics ( lowering the rise in blood sugar in response to food helps some diabetics)

may reduce the risk of stomach cancer

so yaaaaaaa  for garlic

Horseradish to open up the sinuses and dilute mucus. Um Yum! Make your eyes water too.

Rosemary helps with circulation and helps cut the fat in foods.

Cayenne pepper in water is supposed to help with stomach ulcers but didn't do much for me. It did heat up the throat nicely though. Good for circulation and helps raise heat.

Vinegar for sunburn relief.

Meat tenderizer for bee stings.
