rag and bone man

Post: # 34848Post dibnah »

we still regularly get the rag and bone dude around our area, and was thinking how common they are now? We used to have a milkman fish man popman and a guy who went around on a bike sharpening knifes. My favourite was the hunch back plumber who came on a bike with all his stuff stapped to it. Those were the days, I'm only 28 !

I too remember the rag bone man, ours used to be on a horse and cart and you'd here him a mile off, shouting raaaaaaaaagbooooooooone. We also had a popman and a videoman who rented video's from the back of his ford escort van. None of that now though, shame really!

we had one in old trafford, greater (or lesser) manchester... Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagnbn - he had a horse too!! I kind of liked it... perhaps he was the precursor of the freecycle movement in a way.

My gran had a pop man (alpine I think) in Wythenshawe... what a treat it was to go to her house and drink dandelion & burdock or cream soda!!

We did have a fish mannie that came around once a week but I've not seen him for ages now.

The only regular visitor is the postie - and we see the T***o mannie pass by from time to time.

My mum (in Somerset) has the fish van once a week and the library van. Also asparagus delivered from a local farm when it is in season!!

When I was last living in England, in Wimbledon, there was still a rag and bone man around, with horse and cart. This was 11 years ago!

When I lived in France they had the Bread lady and the fruit-and-veg guy who'd come a couple of times every week. Nothing quite so nice as fresh croisants first thing in the morning, or lovely fresh fruit delivered to your door!

When I was little I took a bundle of rags to the Rag man and got a day old chick! Our mam gave it to a neighbour who kept fowls on his allotment and we had it for the next Christmas dinner!
Or so they assured me. :?
We had mobile shops for just about everything. The icecream van sold cigarettes and pop. There was a fish man and a grocery man. Our favourite was the `tuffy man` who brought sweets in a tray round his neck on a Sunday afternoon.

We also had the rag and bone man, the Alpine pop man and a man who sold veg and general groceries. I don't remember what we use to get of the rag and bone man but i know it wasn't a gold fish probably just money.

How about the dunny man? Before houses were connected to sewers, a man with a horse and waste cart would go down to the back lanes, opening a flap at the back of the outside toilet, remove the pan and empty into his cart, then put the pan back and move on.

Now, think Australia, 35-40C summers and hundreds of blowies (big flies).

Ah, I can smell it now...

We have a bread lady comes round 3 times a week with the best baguettes in the area  We also have a bloke with fresh fish, meat and veg who comes round once a week. Trouble is you do feel kinda obliged to buy something as theyve come all the way out here.

I know villages that still have a popman (actually, I know the popman - he married into our family) & mobile butchers. The one I'd really like to see in this city is the guy that sharpens knives. I can remember him when I was little (I'm 35), now I can't find anyone in Leicester to do this. I think I'll have to take them to Lincoln next time I'm visiting as I know a couple of places there that sharpen kitchen knives.
