Well done Sainsbury's - one small step etc

Just heard on Radio 2 news that Sainsbury's are going to replace the packaging on ready meals with stuff that is compostable - one very small step but at least they are trying

They are also giving away a jute bag if you buy a certain amount of organic veg

I saw that on the TV. There was a woman who explained the reason why organic fruit and veg is so overpackaged is so you know what you are getting - they haven't just heaved some non-organic carrots in a crate and put "Organic - £4.99/lb" or whatever on the label.

I wish they'd supply paper bags for the veg. Even the loose mushrooms at sainsburys only have plastic next to them :(

I never shop at Sainsbury's myself - nothing more wrong with them than any of the big supermarkets, it's just there isn't one locally & I do try to avoid most supermarkets - but they do deserve congratulations on this one.

Lets hope the other big players follow suit.

Er... apart from this, that is: note the GM links, the government links, and the obsene wealth.

The first thing that I thought when I heard this was GM alert. It is ironic that all of their organic range is going to be wrapped up in wrapping made from GM crops. Half of it does not even need the amount of wrapping that it has around it.

The reason that organic food in the supermarket has to be pre-packaged is because the check-out person can't tell a loose organic carrot from a loose non-organic one.

Ah. So what we need is GM carrots that fluoresce under the strip lighting. Natch.
