Mulching season?

Post: # 276166Post doofaloofa »

I propose that this time of year is the best time to mulch

Abundant material and high soil temperatures are my reason for assuming this

I mulch with newspaper sheets first and cover with grass mowings, hay, straw, spoilt silage etc, then dib my transplants through, stops the weeds growing up, you can mulch first and then sow green manure over the top, my favourite is tares, it doubles up as good feed for animals if fodder is in short supply. I hardly have any problems with weeds if I do this, but if there is any bare soil, I get a lot of rush seedlings coming up which are a menace to pull out.............. I do mulch under cover of darkness as I don't want the neighbours to witness such subversive behaviour

It is my understanding that mulching preseves soil conditions, at least for a while

So if you mulch at night, it will remain night

You two should do a Horticultural double act, like cannon & ball but with more cabbages.

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

Weeelll...it seems mulching and compost heaps are a bit of a rarity here. Instead they constantly weed, and by the time the weeds are collected up they have dried out and sit in a heap going crisp in the heat. They are piled out on the lane and burned. I am presuming on the lane as all the houses have high walls around them, Chuck a big fat juicy tomato on the ground and it goes to nothing by next day. And no-one has lawns to help with moisture on the heap. Our bit of grass is strimmed and dried to hay in an hour.

Indeed it does, but the speed everything dries means that a lot can't be composted. We are going to have a heap in a shady spot next year for household stuff, soft weeds, rotting fruit and veg and chicken bedding. The grass we keep for nest boxes as with the heat it doesn't get damp as it would in the UK. We will not be growing nearly as much as was put in for us this year, so there will not be as much to get rid of and it will be more manageable.
