growing Fennel

I want to grow some fennel later this year, I noticed that Hugh Furnley grew his in a polytunnel do I need to do this? If I do does it have to be a big tunnel?

i grew some last year, then cut it down, not realising it was a perrenial... it grew back through the winter, and is great now... even though we had coldest winter for hundred years... minus 7 and frosts every morn for months (not usual in portugal)

Fennel is a huge weed of roadsides over here! they die back and then re-grow every year.
