Gardeners World last night...

Do you think The Good Life could be remade, with me or Dave playing Tom Good (maybe not!)? If you have seen something on TV or heard something on the radio recently that you want to talk about, tell us here.

Gardeners World last night...

Post: # 24787Post Han&Matt »

Anyone see it? I can't believe I missed it as my brother tells me the Edgbaston Guinea Gardens were featured - that's where we have an allotment, and where I was last night when it was on TV!

Don't worry - this is the 3rd time the programme has been shown so I was going, "yawn, not again!" but I still watched some of it! It looks like a lovely fun sociable place, especially with the show. That's the one thing I miss out on having my own veg garden at home. Well, OK, I'm in the wrong country too!

The people are almost my favourite bit - there are some real characters at the guinea gardens, some of them have been there for decades, and their plots have come to reflect their own personalities. I love it when one of the old boys come wandering into our plot (gate open, always happens) to have a poke about, tell you stories of past owners and that you've planted the wrong variety of carrots... Reminds me of my grandfather, he'd have loved the opportunity to pass on his knowledge (whether advice was requested or not...)!

Am inspired now to build a shed-house - wh needs an apartment when you've a lottie?!

Ah, something's ringing a bell when you say 'gate'. Is it one of those individual little gardens rather than in the big open allotment area? They featured both on the programme (if memory serves me correctly, as I didn't watch the whole programme this time). If you have one of those individual 'gardens', you are very lucky people. They look delightful! They were used as gardens in the past rather than for growing veg.

Yep, it's the individual gardens with gates and hedges you're thinking of - they are just immense, not what we had in mind when we first visited ("come and have a beer at my allotment some day" meant to us an open rectangle of earth adjacent to others. and free beer). We have I'd guess around half an acre of land  - a stream at the bottom and three apple trees. Much more like a garden - I guess why some folks have pretty large 'sheds' which are pretty much where they live. It is £32 per year to rent - unbelievable, and yes, we are extremely lucky!

Worth a visit if you're in the area (and next door to the botanical gardens), if the gate to 132 is open be sure to pop in!
