Eating new potatoes

I have an old(ish) gardening book that says that you should never eat new potatoes on the day that you harvest them as the flavour will be much improved? Has anyone heard of this? or does anyone agree with this statement? On a slightly different note, I knew an old boy, a poultry keeper of some note, who would not eat eggs on the day that they were layed for the same reason.

Hadn't heard that one - yesterday I ate spuds that I'd dug up that morning. Next time I'll wait until the next day to see if there is any difference!

I never eat eggs when they have just been laid - prefer them older - they are easier to beat/whisk and you can't peel hard boiled eggs until they are at least 10 days old!

Well I've done both and couldn't tell the difference with the spuds or eggs.....................too many curries?

Hmm. Not sure about potatoes, but reeely fresh eggs are a different beast to older ones. Not better, not worse, just different. You need to allow an extra minute when boiling or poaching them, whisking is a nightmare, but for a good pached egg you can't beat fresh. They sit up in little mounds in the hot water - in fact the yolks are usually only half-submerged so stay runny far longer! Just as well we eat breakfast late at weekends...
