Need help planning moving to france, in a yurt :)

The whole reason for the selfsufficientish website was to offer a place where anyone can ask, HOW DO I...? So who knows why it has taken us so long to have a HOW DO I? section, but here it is. So if you want to know how to do anything selfsufficientish then here is the place to ask.

Need help planning moving to france, in a yurt :)

Post: # 244449Post mrtickle »

Hi,

I am hoping to move to S france (midi pyranees) in the next three years (unless it simply will not allow my desire's)

Basically i am going to have a decent amount of money from selling my property in the UK, hopefully iro 80K, i am hoping to buy a nice piece of land with which i can farm crops, manage my waste, and drink/wash in an eco friendly manner. I intend to live in a yurt, and am strongly considering building a few holiday yurts to give me the financial freedom to travel, well that or find land with a property that i can renovate (eco friendly ofc) and rent out.

I am hoping that people with experience may be able to offer advice, either on my initial plans, or with better plans. I have no idea on the legalities of erecting yurts in france, how i would deal with the initial problem of nil income/food, or to be perfectly honest most things involved with such a project.

There seems to be a lot to consider, even at a glance;

What is the best way to supply power? (minimal supply needed, considering a solar generator)
Do i need a water supply, i don't want to be paying ANY un-needed rates, unless PAYG usage, but don't know how things work in france :/ Obviously though rainwater is not a guarantee, and given that i am vegan crops will be vital.
Will i need to buy residential land to erect yurts and/or rent them out?
What tax's will i be subjected to?
Would i be entitled to state benefits until i could find a temporary income source?
Are there laws restricting what crops i can plant (i.e if someone see's my project as an eyesore or some such issue)
Are the laws prohibiting the felling of tree's responsibly (for firewood)
Is it legal for me to process my own waste?

It would be great if anyone in the know could get me on the right track, it is early days yet but i really want for this to happen :) Given that i have never lived in a yurt, or france this is a scary but exciting prospect.

From one who has emigrated (albeit to a predominantly English-speaking country) I would say, just go. When you get to roughly your chosen region, rent for six months and get to know the area, the people, the ins and outs - then buy land if you're still motivated.
There is no question. Cap and Share or TEQs is the answer. Even Cap and Dividend!
